Our travel guide to the magic islands.

Getting around

Rental car

Renting a car is in my opinion the best way to see the islands. There are buses but it can be challenging to get to all the places you might want to see. Many people opt to rent cars from there arrival point. This could be Evenes, Svolvær or Leknes for example. There are plenty of options for rental car companies which can be found online.

Camper van

An option that has become very popular is to rent a camper van to give you the full freedom to explore. A great option but be aware in the summer months the roads get very busy with many camper vans and holiday traffic. There are many companies to choose from if you want the van life experience so i wont list any here.

Car

Many tourists arrive in Lofoten with the ferry from either Skutvik, Bognes or Bodø, while others drive from Sweden via Kiruna. From Harstad or Narvik you can drive on the E10.

If you drive a car in Lofoten, there is no need for ferries between Moskenes in the south to Fiskebøl in the north. Most of the Lofoten Islands are connected by bridges and tunnels and have a total distance from Fiskebøl to Å of 163 km if driving along the E10.  The exceptions are Skrova, Vårøy and Røst which you will have to take a ferry

Ferries

You can travel to the Lofoten Islands by ferry or express boat from the north or south. There is an app you can use called “Reis” when planning your trip. Download from App Store, or from Google Play. With the app, you can plan journeys and see departure times for public transport for the whole of Nordland. Logos below identifies the app.

In the summer it can get very busy,so it’s a good idea to order your tickets a minimum of one day in advance. Most routes have extra departures during the summer months. More information about the ferries to and from Lofoten here:
