Kiting the Lofoten Islands - general information

There are few places like Lofoten Islands. There are even fewer people that come here to kite. It’s not your typical wind sport destination! The surf scene has had a big influx of tourist that come to surf the world class spot at Unstad. The kiting and winging scene has not had the same increase, which i’m secretly happy about as that means we get uncrowded spots.

I guess the cold is what puts most people off as it can be brutal. Other challenges are small launching/landing areas, local wind variations and currents. What I would say if you get the preparation right and you have the right gear for the job then you will be rewarded with sessions in one of the most scenic spots you will ever ride.

Spot guide here. We are updating this from time to time so its worth checking back.

As for wetsuits I use a 5/4 for the summer along with hood, boots and gloves. You can do with boots etc depending on how you feel the cold. For the winter i’m using a 6/5 from Cskins which works great. Built in hood and boots and gloves are a must.

TOP TIP I bring a flask of warm/hot water to add to the boots and gloves to save your energy warming them up. It’s also a fantastic way of keeping you out for longer when you do feel the cold after a long session.
